The physical benefits of growing your own produce are well known but the emotional benefits are often overlooked. Tap into what makes humans tick, improve your mental health and retreat to the garden with family and friends. Connecting with each other, contributing to a project and sharing the fruits of our labour over a meal meets many of our needs. If you can’t have your own productive space at home, then consider joining the many community gardens and gardening clubs located near you.
Just getting out into the garden whether you are keeping on top of the weeds or picking flowers can be uplifting to your mood. If time and space allows then growing your own produce is one of the most rewarding things you can do. There is nothing better than watching something grow from a small seed/seedling to a plant producing an edible fruit or vegetable. The nutritional content will far outweigh bought produce from the supermarket, saving time and money and reducing your carbon footprint also.
If you enjoy spending time in the garden then consider starting your own productive garden. It doesn’t need to be a huge area and you can be just as successful using pots or planter boxes.
If your garden space allows, raise some poultry and start enjoying the nutrient rich eggs that they will produce for you. And if you’re really keen, there are meat chicken breeds that make great eating, so really you can go as far as you want production wise. Chickens are easy to keep and provide wonderful fertilizer for the gardens, especially the veggie patch.
