A larger form of the commonly known Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is the Strelitzia nicolia also known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise. They have an appearance of lush, large leaves with a beautiful blue and white flower, typical of the bird of paradise, which flower Summer through to Autumn & sometimes in Winter in warmer regions. Nicolia is from southern Africa and prefers tropic and subtropical gardens where it will require little watering once established.
Strelitzia nicolia are tight clumping and tend to have an untidy appearance as they grow up to 8M or more in the ground and like to hold onto their old flowers and leaves, leaving it hard to maintain when mature. They do well in a full sun to part shade area and can handle long periods of time between watering. Removing old flowers will promote a longer flowering and ensure the tidiness of the plant.
On the other hand, they are one of the best indoor plants with their lush, hardy leaves. Once potted, their mature size is restricted making them much easier to maintain. Flowering is less likely if the plant is without sun but large pots ensure a stunning display around pool & entertaining areas.
