To ensure healthy Kangaroo Paw plants, proper soil preparation is essential. These plants require excellent drainage to thrive and are prone to root rot in waterlogged conditions.

Soil Type: Light sandy soils are ideal, but if your garden has heavy clay soil, improvements can be made.

Improving Drainage: Mix sand or fine gravel into the soil to create a well-draining substrate. Incorporate organic matter such as compost or aged bark to enhance soil structure without retaining too much moisture. If planting in clay soil, create raised garden beds to prevent waterlogging.

pH Levels: Kangaroo Paw prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH 6.0–7.5). Test your soil and adjust with sulphur or lime if necessary.

Mulching: Use a coarse mulch, like wood chips or pine bark, around the base of the plant to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and prevent direct soil compaction.

Planting Technique: Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball. Position the plant so the crown sits slightly above soil level to reduce the risk of crown rot. Backfill with the prepared soil and firm down gently around the base of the plant. Water deeply but allow the soil to dry out between watering.

Anigozanthos – Kangaroo Paw are a great addition to your Australian garden.  Mass plantings provide a kaleidoscope of flower colour to your landscape.
